Do I Need to See a Doctor for Pink Eye?

It’s time for back to school! And with it comes a multitude of potential health issues. Today, we are going to discuss Pink Eye or Conjunctivitis.

What is pink eye?

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is an inflammation or irritation of the eye. Pink eye can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection. It can also be caused by allergies or irritants. Conjunctivitis can be extremely contagious. It is spread by contact of eye secretions from someone who has an active infection.

Pink eye is very common in school age children. Hand washing is of utmost importance to prevent the spread of conjunctivitis. Also avoid touching the eyes. Do not share contact lenses, makeup or eyeglasses.

What are the symptoms of pink eye?

Symptoms include itching, redness and excessive tearing. Burning, swelling and a gritty feeling in the eye may occur. Discharge and a crusty substance around the eyes is common as well. Upon waking, some patients will find they are unable to open their eye. A warm washcloth to loosen the buildup of secretions can be very helpful.

When do I need to see a doctor for pink eye?

Many cases of conjunctivitis clear up on their own. However sometimes a visit to a healthcare provider is needed. Please seek medical attention if the following symptoms go along with your pink eye:

  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred Vision
  • Moderate to severe eye pain
  • Intense redness in the eye
  • A weakened immune system
  • Symptoms that get worse or do not improve
  • Pre-existing eye infections

A newborn baby or infant with symptoms of pink eye should see a doctor immediately.

How is pink eye treated?

If your conjunctivitis doesn’t clear up you may need antibiotics or steroids to help clear it up.
