Flu season has officially hit Virginia. We’re not seeing a lot of cases yet but we expect them to be on the rise. It’s not too late to get a flu shot! The best line of defense is to wash your hands every chance you get! The second best thing is, once you begin experiencing symptoms, come in to see one of our providers. If we see you within the first 48 hours of symptoms appearing, there are medications that will shorten the flu’s duration.
Common Flu Symptoms
For reference, here are some common flu symptoms to look out for:
- Body Aches
- Fever
- Nasal Congestion (runny or stuffy nose)
- Sore Throat
- Cough
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Chills
- Extreme fatigue or feeling tired
People with the flu are contagious in the first few days after contracting the virus.
Who is most at risk from the flu?
Over 80,000 people were hospitalized last year from flu complications.
People with a compromised immune system are much more susceptible to the flu. This includes the following
- Elderly (over 65 years old)
- Children (under the age of 5)
- People with Asthma
- People with Diabetes
- People with Heart Disease
- Pregnant Women
